About Yoga

The yoga exercises that we practise originate from the ancient texts of India (The Vedas). Yoga can be translated as unity, and on a simple level refers to the unity of the body, mind and soul. However the original goal of the yogi was self-realisation or unity of the individual soul with the divine.

Who We Trained With

Janice trained with the Sivananda Yoga Organisation and teaches Classical Hatha Yoga, based on the Sivananda class structure.

Class Structure

In a typical class we practise breathing exercises (Pranayama), flowing warm-up movements (Sun Salutations or Surya Namska), 12 basic postures with variations (Asanas), and relaxation and meditation techniques (Shavasan and Dharana).

About Sivananda

Sivananda yoga was brought to the West by Swami Vishnudevanada in 1957. He was sent by his teacher Swami Sivananda with the message ‘the West needs yoga’. With just pennies in his pocket he came and set up the sivananda yoga vedanta centres and ashrams which are now a worldwide organisation spreading the teachings of yoga, and offering worldwide yoga teachers training courses.

The Five Points of Yoga

Swami Vishnudevananda developed five basic principles on how to practice Yoga in the west:

These points are:

1. Proper Exercise (Asanas)
2. Proper Breathing (Pranayama)
3. Proper Relaxation (Savasan)
4. Proper Diet (Vegetarian)
5. Positive Thinking and Meditation (Vedanta and Dhyana)
